A welcome back message from President J. Larry Jameson

August 25, 2026 - Hello, and welcome to a new academic year at Penn. As we begin the semester, I want to share a few thoughts.

First, Penn is better because you are here. I say this often while meeting new and returning students and their families, but it bears repeating because it is true. You, our students, faculty, staff, and alumni are what drive Penn's mission and leadership in the world. We are at our best when we learn together.

Second, our strategic initiative, Penn Forward, is gaining momentum as we focus on the future. Be on the lookout this fall for updates on how Penn is building trust, enabling discovery, and expanding our reach. In the meantime, I want to thank all of the teams that have been working hard to bring these priorities to life. Across the university and the health system, people are refreshing old models and testing new ideas. These efforts lie at the heart of our institution, persistently creating and applying new knowledge and ideas. That creative energy drives Penn and propels our reputation in the world. It's our greatest strength, and I celebrate you for it.

Third, this is the year for Penn anniversaries. 275 years of Pennsylvania Hospital, 150 years of women at Penn. The Palestra, Penn football, Career Services, Kelly Writers House, Platt Student Performing Arts House, Perry World House, and Pennovation are all observing big milestones. I encourage you to join these celebrations as we honor our history and look to the future.

Our community has never been more vibrant or better positioned to do transformative things. In our learning and teaching, research, clinical care, and service, I'm inspired every day by what we achieve here for society and in the world. I believe we have another amazing year ahead, so thank you and welcome back.
